I have a 2013 Terrain that I setup for flat towing and ran into the same question. Consulted the dealer and was told that there is no fuse that specifically deals with the brake lights only. I went with the adding tail light bulbs and kits from Roadmaster. They are a separate system from all of the systems of the toad and work just like trailer lights. When the braking (Brakebuddy) presses the brake peddle and activates the vehicle lights it just adds to the intensity of the taillights. The turn signals work from the added bulbs in the Roadmaster system. Roadmaster Tail Light Wiring Kit with Bulbs Roadmaster Tow Bar Wiring RM-155

I have not towed yet but am all set up baseplate installed, wiring done with using the Blue Ox using diodes. I thought the diodes were used to stop feed back? When I switch #32 fuse off I don't see what it does?? What all shuts down?

Hi All,

I see that this thread hasn't been active since Oct. 2013, but hopefully it can still become active with this post.

I just had a Blue Ox base plate installed on my 2012 Chevy Equinox. I also got the Patriot Brake system. As I'm looking at videos on YouTube, I see some people that appear to be towing their vehicles (not an Equinox) without a brake system.

My questions are:
Is a brake system required on all toads?
Do you pull your toad without using a braking system?

Thanks for any help that you can provide.

I have towed our 2012 Equinox and other toads several miles. I would never tow it with out my brake buddy. I have had occasions when I have had to stop quick and without the brake buddy I would wonder if I could have avoided an accident? I have also had the yoke on my hitch break, lucky for us we weren't in traffic. If and when the toad is detached from the MH the brake buddy is activated by the cable being detached from the MH. The toads brakes are activated stopping it . For your own piece of mind, and safety, use a brake buddy.
I think it's #32 fuse that needs to be pulled. I installed a lighted rocker switch on the access door to the fuse panel on the passenger side. Very simple install . Bought at Auto Zone.
Welcome to the forum!

We have a ready brake, I think it's like the brake buddy. It's a pretty easy system to install. We too have had a couple times we were glad for the braking system. In some states it's mandatory. We also installed a switch on our #32 fuse. Enjoy the forums, they're great help.

Hi,

Thanks for your comments.

I'll continue to use my Patriot brake system. I just wondered if some don't use a braking system. I didn't know that it's mandatory in some states. I guess if I use it all the time when I tow, I don't have to worry about which ones.

I also had the fuse bypass switch installed (fuse #32).

Thanks again. I'll keep reading the forum to learn more.

Ken
