You did not say what year your car is. Many newer cars do not have a steering wheel lock. My 2012 Mazda does not.
FIRST, verify that your car DOES INDEED HAVE a steering wheel lock.
1) Sit behind the wheel WITHOUT the key in the ignition. Have the steering wheel turned slightly left or right.
2) Grab the steering wheel at the 9:00 O'clock position and the 3:00 O'clock position.
3) FORCEFULLY turn the wheel to the LEFT as far as you can. THEN FORCEFULLY turn the steering wheel as far to the RIGHT as you can.
4) IF you DO have a steering wheel lock, while turning the wheel you should hear a click and the steering wheel should will turning.
If you cannot turn the wheel, have a muscular friend try it.
If you do NOT have a steering wheel lock, you are good to go.
If you DO have a steering wheel lock, follow the advice of others posted above.
