There are flat bed trailers that get all four wheels off the ground, and there are tow dollys that take the front wheels off the ground and the toad rolls on the rear wheels. Most FWD cars historically have been towable on a dolly. Some/most RWD, 4WD and AWD models are not towable with the rear wheels on the ground.
I have flat towed and dolly towed with my MH, and have used a trailer in other situations. A trailer would definitely be more complicated/cumbersome/etc. A dolly is less trouble than a trailer (smaller, easier to deal with overall) but still is another set of wheels to maintain, store, etc. Four-down is the easiest for frequent towing, but does limit your vehicle choice much more and requires installation of baseplate, etc designed for that specific vehicle.
Cars towable 4-down are becoming more rare as time goes on. The website of
Store : Remco is a good place to go to enter your particular make & model and see what the towing experts say is required and/or possible.
