Ford Ranger or Chevy Colorado for a TOAD

We are looking to purchase either a used Ford Ranger or a used Chevy Colorado for our Toad. Our hitch is limited to 5000 lbs. Are there any concerns I need to be aware of as I search for one of these vehicles?
Thank you for your responses.

Bought a used 2021 Ranger 4WD Supercab and love it, have about 10,000 miles towing and it is great.

Weighs in a little over 4400 lbs with 1/2 tank of gas. I carry a 12 foot inflatable catamaran, battery and electric trolling motor in the bed along with all necessary boating/fishing gear for 2. It has a soft tonneau cover to keep thing relatively safe. Still comes in well under 5000 pounds.

I also put a flagpole hitch in the receiver for my Starlink so if the RV is in a bad spot, I can park the back of the truck in a clear spot with the Starlink on the flagpole on the rear of the truck. I just move it to the RV bumper bolt on receiver when we leave in the truck.

I have a 2019 GMC Canyon (Similar to the Chevy). It has a GVW of 6000 lbs. We do load some "overflow" in it (who doesn't)? I always use GVWR to determine what i can safely tow. I'm sure a Chevy Colorado is similar.

With a 5000 lbs tow rating, you'll be close if not over.

I set my MH up with a 10,000 tow bar and Air Force 1 brake setup. I've got 15,000 lbs of tow capacity, so a little to play with!! I like margin.

Looked for both Colorado/Canyon and Ranger but they were scarce and the prices seemed high. Ended up with a Maverick hybrid and it tows great (Roadmaster baseplate and tow bar). And it’s at least 500 lbs lighter than a Ranger.

Remember, the 2024 Ford Ranger is not flat towable.
In So Cal, the used 2023 Rangers were selling for more than new car $$$.

I went with the GMC Canyon. Now I'm looking for the right Class C to hit the road with.
