The Ford Towing Guide only goes back to 2002, but it states that the manual transmission is towable, but the auto is not.

Remco states the 2001 is towable with the manual trans, but not the auto.

Check your owners manual.

On a vehicle that old, I suggest calling Remco directly. I think they will tell you the manual trans is towable as is and the auto will require a driveshaft disconnect. The disconnects are not bad and quite reliable, had one on my wife's 02 explorer for 10 yrs and 100k miles. Towed it better than 40,000 on top of that.

Although I am not ready to part out correct advise, I have looked at the Ranger slightly as well. I recall there is a difference in towability if it is a 4 X 4 it may be, a 2 WD may not work. The same goes for the small Chevy and GMC.

The Ranger 4x4 automatics are towable from 2005 on with a nuetral tow kit installed. We tow a 2008 and carry our Harley in the 7 ft box.
