Fueling up whilst towing a toad

Are there any tips you guys and gals can give when choosing a gas station when towing a toad w a 36 ft gasser? Have not yet filled up with the toad in tow would appreciate tips in choosing a station, choosing a specific pump etc. I refuel from the back of the coach

I used to have a 36' gasser and when towing would look for stations where the pumps were parallel to the road. If the exit where I pulled off didn't have that arrangement, I'd carefully look to see if I could maneuver if not, back on the road to the next exit. Only once in 25+ years of towing have I had to disconnect the toad due to contsrained area to move around.
Bottom line, take your time and make sure you are comfortable with the layout (ingress and egress) before you commit to entering the station.

If you have to use a station with pumps perpendicular to the store, try to use the end pumps. A lot of Pilot/Flying J stations have separate RV islands that serve both gas and diesel rigs.

Good answers above but I'll add to them:
Plan ahead a little sooner to be looking for an accessible station to refuel. This will give you a little cushion and not force you to have to pull into a spot which is difficult to get out of.

I find it easier to circle near the station and be facing the highway while filling up when using pumps perpendicular to the store. Getting lined up to the pump is usually easier, and you don’t have to worry about the cars parking at the building blocking you in.

We hardly ever fuel up unless we first look over the area using Google Earth. It usually gives us all the information we need to enter and exit or to avoid.

I had a gasser 36' gasser before.

So far all good answers.

One I will add. Your are pretty much always dealing with fuel location designed for cars. If unsure. Stop while still on the highway and take a really good look. Make your plan BEFORE you enter the station. So what if the cars behind you stop and honk. What are they going to do? Hurt your feelings? One thing I teach in truck driving school. You're bigger than them. Stop before you hit anything and let them move out of your way.

Best advice on fueling:


Use gasbuddy to scroll along your route-- locate stations based on price, stations you prefer, credit cards, etc.


Use google earth on both satellite view and street view to verify easy in and out and exactly how you will enter/exit.

Agree with google earth, just remember the photo may be old. 90% of the time it is accurate..

What they all said, but most importantly don't wait too long to get fuel in case your planned stop is not as accessible as it look if you scouted ahead.

With both my old gassers and dp I start looking at around 1/2 tank for a accessible station. Also unless I'm absolutely sure I can use the outside pump and there is room to get out I avoid the stations that have the angled island that usually face the store.

Park at pump so you have a ease exit . Getting in is easier than exiting . Face highway / exit so a car doesn't block you . Most station have diesel / gas at outside pumps , so I always use those pumps ,a DP. Racetrack , newer Circle K's , and Buckee's have larger foot print stations so google map it before getting there .

I always look at google earth and figure out how Im going to enter and exit the pumps. Also where will I wait if the pump is busy. I reference the distance with vehicles on google earth, and the and the scale on the bottom.

I also try to pull up as far from the pumps as I can . Having the hose extended. This give more room to maneuver when exiting the pumps.
