Why do people keep putting their faith in the “Dinghy Guide”. The best thing to do is download the Owners Manual for the vehicle in question and see what the manufacturer says.

We just bought a 2013 Explorer AWD and the Owner's Manual and the 2013 Dinghy Guide both tell us that we CAN flat tow all four down. Now you guys got me scared talking about this "Neutral Tow Kit"?
The book says; 1)65 mph max, 2)neutral, and 3)Start the engine and allow to run for 5 minutes at the beginning of each day and every 6 hours thereafter, 4)With motor running and foot on brake shift through each of the gears and then back into neutral.
Doesn't say anything about leaving the key in "on" position (doesn't the steering wheel lock if the key is not left "on"?).
Roadmaster web site says it WILL drain the battery and there is NOT a fuse kit available. If I DO NOT leave the key in the "on" position, then why would the battery drain?

I have a 2011 being towed by. 2020 Forza Winnie. Towed since 2011. Towed great, but needed to add a charge line for the battery. Bought charge line online. Still working great. Also love the Edge.

Yes. 2014 Ford Edge Limited. 3.5L V6 DOHC 24V. AWD. The other engine cannot be towed. Flat towed this vehicle from Florida to Seattle and back to Colorado. No problem, except for misconfiguring the tow braking system which created flat spots on all 4 new tires! Ugh.

For my 2014 Ford Edge Limited, it is recommended (by dealer) every 5 hours of towing. Start and cycle thru the gears (D/R) a few times. Do this over a period of 5 mins. No need to unhook. It was also advised to keep under 65mph.

Last shift
Last shift should be from drive to neutral, not reverse to neutral

Can you explain the rationale behind this procedure?

No I can't explain the rationale, I'm sure there are others on this forum who are far more qualified than me that may be able to explain, but the owners manual of my Saturn (and I thought others I've seen) specifically stated to "run down" through the gears R,N,D,2,1 and then back "up" from 1 through 2 into D and lastly end back in N.
So that's what I've always done with the Saturn and will continue to do with the Explorer. They also state to rest in each position for about ten seconds before shifting to the next position. This of course is WITH the engine running

Be careful, my Lincoln owner's manual says exactly the opposite. Last shift should be from reverse to neutral. Check your owner’s manual and follow it carefully.

New Ford Lightening
Does anyone know if you can flat tow one of the new Ford Lightenings? Seems like you should be able to easily. I sold my Cadillac and then my 4 X 4 truck as I didn't think I would be able to use the motorhome or tow car again. But my neuropathy has been treated and I really think I'm good to go again.
But I wouldn't mind having a mid level Lightening for towing and a general running around vehicle for me.
Hubs has a new gas F-150, so can't use it.
Just curious.

I was just reading that Ford is coming out (2022) with a hybrid Maverick truck that is 4 wheel down flat towable. It’s MSRP is $19,995 and 3 months no payment and 3 years no interest.
https://media.ford.com/content/fordm...-maverick.html
The 2.5L I4 Hybrid is the model that can be flat towed behind an RV
