Help with setting up Acme Eze-Tow Dolly?
Hello, just purchased an acme eze-tow dolly ! I have many questions, namely: plan to tow a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe. This SUV has a keyless ignition system. Struggling with how to get it into steering column unlocked, as required by this Dolly. I have called 3 Hyundai dealerships and gotten 3 different answers. I believe we can use the ACC position on ignition button But do we then remove car battery negative connection? If so do we need a memory saver to plug into the lighter socket? How long can We tow with a 9 volt battery supply to the memory saver? I have read about removing the spark plug for radio, would that be a better solution? Any and all input would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Owners manual should have a section on towing. If need be, get the memory saver and just pull the cable. Further, I was unaware that Hyundai was still using steering locks, their steering , at least on small cars is electric, and no physical lock, that I know of. I am away from my car at the moment so I cant really check on it. What 3 answers did the dealer give you? Were you talking to the service managers?

Hi Dmg066,
I've had my eze-tow for just under 3 years. Works well.
I tow a 2004 Mazda 6. Different from your SUV but let me share some info.
I believe many manufacturers stopped using locking steering columns a few years ago. If you have a keyless ignition most likely your column doesn't lock. This is just my general observation. So, you may be good to go. Too bad you can't get a definitive answer on what should be a simple question. Perhaps a call to Hyundai corporate will get you the answer.
My Mazda does lock the steering wheel. I unlock it by turning the key to 'run' and leave the key in it.
To prevent the battery from dying while being towed, I use a quick disconnect on the negative terminal battery. Easy to disconnect and reconnect.
This does cause the settings on the radio to be erased but it doesn't bother me much. I haven't bothered to get the memory saving thingie that you can insert into your 12 volt outlet.
Since doing the battery disconnect as above, I discovered that my steering wheel only locks when I pull the ignition key out. I can turn the key to off and the wheel is still free to rotate. When you pull the key you can hear a very distinctive clunk of the locking mechanism.
Hope this helps a bit in your search for the facts.
Dave
