I think as long as it's front wheel drive you can. You cannot tow four down however.

It depends on the year. See Store : Remco and input the correct info to check out your specific car.

You would need to tow it backwards. Smart cars are rear wheel drive.

NO! The wheel base is too short and the rear end would drag on the ground. And my 2012 Smart has been towed 4 down for over 45,000 miles. See the photo in my signature. I installed a battery disconnect switch under the dashboard since the battery is under the passenger side floor board. Before towing I just put it in neutral and discount the battery.
Your owner's manual should be consulted. If you do choose to tow yours 4 down I highly recommend a Demco base plate as it has the least amount of hardware that remains when you are disconnected.
I use a ReadyBrake tow bar but bought it cheaper from etrailer.com
