Hi Low Hitches

Let me open with I am new to the RV world. We are the new owners of a Newmar DSDP. I'm in the process of buying a 2015 Jeep Wrangler and working on the towbar for the connection between the two.

My QUESTION is: the Jeep has a GVWR of 5500#, can I buy an oversized (say 10,000#) Hi Low hitch and use the upper hitch for some light storage? What I have in mind is a small box (think small pickup tool box) that I can slide a Weber Q grill in.

Thanks in Advance

That should work, as long as you have the necessary clearances. Your hitch is rated at 10K pounds, so with proper setup, should be good.

Are you planning on towing with the hi-low hitch AND incorporating some type of storage? I've been looking for some kind of dual hitch to do the same. Any photos of your setup or what you plan to use?

I'm planning on towing with the low and using the upper for storage.
I went to Croft Trailer and they showed me a Roadmaster component (p/n 077-2) that keeps the 10,000# towing capacity and provides two shanks for connection. One above the other.

I also found this old IRV2 article about BlueOx and horizontal alignment.
https://www.irv2.com/forums/f85/tow-....html#poststop
Here is the main point: Blue Ox's recommendation is that the receiver hitch of the motorhome should never be more than 4 inches higher than the baseplate attachment points. Four inches or less keeps the tow bar level with the ground or slightly angled up towards the coach from the car. The tow bar should never be angled "up"¯ towards the car from the coach.

The Jeep I go pickup this coming weekend has slightly oversized tires. I'm not sure what my horizontal alignment is going to be with a drop hitch and raised Jeep.

Stay tuned - If I figure it out I will post.

Hi Low Hitches

Yes that will work provided the height is close. Be sure and use some hitch tighteners because all hitch connections are somewhat sloppy and you’re adding one extra. For the best towing experience you don’t want your towed to be moving side to side taking up the slack in connections.

Assuming you’re talking about something like this? I have flat towed with this one.
