Honda CR-V toads

This thread is really about only Honda CR-Vs used as toads.

I read where Honda only approves the CR-V to be flat towed at 65mph or lower. In reality will briefly exceeding the 65mph limit such as for passing damage the Honda's trany?

This only applies to 2014 and earlier models of the CR-V.

Nope. I've been dragging a 2014 CRV behind a motorhome since 2015. Have gone over 65mph for brief periods as noted. I think Honda is just covering their "you know what" by setting a speed limit.

The manual in my 99 CRV just said do not exceed the speed limit. No specific speed was mentioned.

Our 2014 AWD CR-V has been towed ~30,000 miles behind our MH. The only effect I am aware of is that we had to replace steering bushings at about 100k miles which wasn't surprising given that the actual mileage was more like 130,000!

I try to keep it at ~65 mph, but there have been times when the speed climbed to ~70.

Same here with our 2005 and 2014 CRVs

No issues so far with brief excursions up to 72-ish MPH.

It's not the speed per se; it's the amount of heat build-up in the transmission when it has no cooling or lubrication of its own. Higher speeds is one factor, but so is ambient air temperature, road surface temperature, and so one. The Honda engineers worry about worse case scenarios where all the factors get high at the same time. So maybe lift your right foot a bit on very hot days or when the sun is broiling the pavement. Or maybe even stop and run the toad engine for a few minutes so the tranny can cool down & lubricate on its own. Otherwise, no worries.

Been towing our 2013 for almost three years now, having purchased it from someone else who towed it, and I occasionally drift over 65 with no ill effects. 98% of my towing is 55-65mph. We have 98K on the clock and who knows how many miles towed.

We don't exceed 65, except for rare occasions when we pass somebody. If driving over eight hours, during a rest stop before we reach that point, I go back and run it through the pre tow procedure. Still the best all around toad on the road.
