How dolly modification?

I recently picked up a Roadmaster RM3400 dolly to tow a 2005 PT Cruiser convertible behind a 2015 Thor Challenger. First tow was fine except for clearance when trying to release the ratchets for unloading. The plastic fascia on the front bumper doesn't allow the ratchets to open up.
Do you think it would be alright to fit a piece of 2×12 in the wells the tires rest in? I've checked and the 2×12 would fit into the well perfectly. A front stop would also need to be attached. I think the additional 1.5 inches of height would allow the ratchets to open up.
Opinions and other ideas are welcomed.

Thank you.

You could raise the tires as suggested or add a block to the front stop so the car sits back a little more.
