We had a tow dolliy in the past .... has to be front wheel drive ..... no not registering any miles because the drive wheels are off the ground.

4 down... our Jeep Wrangler transfer case is shifted into neutral and ..... no not registering any miles either, thats why they are so popular to tow.

I dont know about other brands though, some require the key in and different setups

Some food for though our last tow dolly purchased new was $2100 in 2016 and to get our 2018 Jeep FULLY set up to tow 4 down was just over $3000.

Some used cars on Craigslist come set up to tow.

Good Luck!

Our particular Wrangler required the ignition key to be in place in order to neutralize the steering lock (Many, probably most Wranglers do not have a steering lock, so no issue.) When we towed like this with the major 60 amp fuse pulled, we clocked miles. After I added a battery disconnect we no longer clocked miles.
Last week I removed the steering lock altogether, so the key will stay in my pocket. No miles will be clocked from here on in.
I don't know about other vehicles....

Do you have a toad? If so year. make and model will help us to help you.

I've pulled a Suzuki XL7, Miata and a Lexus...none of them registered miles.

Well,

it was actually a general question, just curious. I tow a 2013 nissan cvt cube front wheel drive on a dolly. the odometer is not spinning...

As mentioned , front wheel drive on a dolly , the drive wheels and the speedo drive aren't turning , so no odometer movement .

My , mini van , requires the key be on to keep the steering from locking , and the battery disconnected to stop the odometer from registering .

Just about every modern ; electronic speedo ; vehicle that's towable 4 down will have either a fuse to pull , require battery disconnect, or transfer case in neutral, to stop the odometer from racking up the miles.
If your towing a vehicle with a cable drive speedo ...well that's a different kettle of fish.

Most new cars would require the ignition to be on (not just the accessory position) for the speedometer to read speed or record miles.

Pretty standard answer is.....if the front wheels are on a dolly, no miles recorded because almost all vehicles record from front wheels.

A lot of 4 down toads do not record mileage either, but there’s always exceptions to this rule.

No miles added when I pull my 2010 Ranger.
Key is in unlock position, but nothing is on.
Happy Glamping.

For most cars the answer is "No".

Older cars with a manual transmission and a spinning cable from the rear of the transmission to the odometer will clock miles towed, but cars with modern electronic odometers will not if the procedure in the owners manual is followed correctly.

In these days of digital odo/speedo and electronic controls, the answer is almost universally NO, as long as ignition is Off or ACC. If ignition is ON or engine running, probably yes.

so hypothetically speaking, some people drag their toad all over the country side, like east coast to west coast and Alaska to Florida. since the toad used mainly for local sightseeing and grocery runs near the campground, most of the wear on tires from towing. so hypothetically speaking one might go back to the tire shop and say "these tires only have 5,000 miles on them and almost bald, the warranty states good for 25,000 miles, I'd like a new set please....."

and again I'm only hypothetically speaking. I'm sure no one here would try this stunt.
