I also got the kit in hand - wow! I'm pretty handy but will gladly pay the dealer to do this installation.

That was my thought, those instructions are not that well done IMO. after seeing the install, if someone would do a video its not that complicated, the instructions with pictures that have few reference points is the problem. If your going to do instructions, make it clear. I think those instructions were approved by an commissioned mechanic.

I did the install of the similar wiring harness on our Cherokee, and the instructions really were poorly done, with a series of photos taken from differing angles of the same subject, and differences (mistakes?) between the actual kit and the instructions, in particular the console switch with the instructions stating to install it with the notch up, where it must be installed with the notch down, or vice versa. (My guess is the production kits used a different switch than the prototype kits with the on/off notch being on opposite sides)

Crystal Jeep in Homosassa FL did the installation today. Less than $200 with me supplying the kit. Did a good job, took about 2.5 hours.

Now (finally) ready to tow the new GC.

What tow bar setup are you using?

I ask these questions because I am gathering enough information to see if it is not an actual car mfg problem but instead a Base Plate mfg problem along with the fact that the Tow Bar setup has not been tightened up.
There fix was to toe out the wheels a few degrees ,make sure all components are tight ,dealer will just replace all parts good and maybe bad ,I went through this and when went to pickup it was obvious the wheels were toe out.

I am the one that found the fix and posted to mutliple sites, including various Jeep forums.

First time after I figured it out and posted it was here on this forum: https://www.irv2.com/forums/f85/jeep...ml#post5629545 Post number 304.

Well, like several posted here, I went ahead and bought the wire harness kit for our 21 GC with the intent to install after we finished with the baseplate install. Iím not usually a timid guy when it comes to installing stuff but those instructions were made for mechanics, not end users. They suck!!!

Pulled off the fascia, installed the baseplate and all went back together just fine....with one exception; apparently when you disconnect the adaptive cruise control and parking sensors, you have to have them ďrecalibratedĒ by the dealer. The dash letís you know it!!!! And the sensors are super sensitive now.

So now we have an appointment next week to install that wire harness and calibrate those sensors. $330 for the labor.

Good times!!!!

Strange we had different outcomes.

I self installed Blue Ox baseplate. No issues when I removed and re-installed the fascia.

2021 GC Anniversary model (based on Limited), with ACC and parking sensors.

Same. My 17 had no issue after reassembling. Same electrical architecture as current.

Strange indeed!!
Interesting that the dash warned me to see the dealer for calibration for something like the first 3 start ups after reconnecting the sensors and yours didnít.

I didn't have that problem when we installed on my 2016 GC Overland High Altitude. In fact, I don't recall having to disconnect the sensors, but it's been years. Seems to me if you didn't energize the system (by pushing start button) while disconnected, it wouldn't know you had done so.

Answer to "What about Pre-2018 Models for the Flat Tow Kit?"

After asking my local Jeep dealer parts folks to look into the 2017 and earlier application, they sent me to Jeep Cares to see if they can help. Jeep Cares sent me to a Parts guy in their unit who did some digging for me today. He was very helpful, though he apologized for the bad news he had to share. He researched part number 82216418AA (for the 2018+ Grand Cherokees) and found a red flag in the system that said this part will not work with 2017's or early and to not use it for those model years. No reason why was given but he speculated there was a change in the control module(s) or wiring harness. He checked to see if there was a fix coming but his resources saw nothing in the works. He said it was unlikely to be developed given the vehicles are already 4 years old and no later models can use the harness.

I'll keep checking from time to time to see if something changes and will post anything I find. If anyone hears of an idea for addressing the wobble in these more "seasoned" vehicles, please let us know. Thanks!

I know for a fact that they changed some things on the 2018 models. One change was to the computer system to prevent what they considered "hacking" via the OBD port. Some of those devices have a newer version available, but they don't connect to the OBD port. They get connected at other locations.
