Texas requires brakes on any trailer (that term includes a car in tow) that weighs over 4,500lbs. Most four door Jeeps are over this number.

Other states have their own regulations. Most commonly they require brakes for anything over 3,500lbs, though some are lower, some higher. You need to be compliant with the regulations of the state you are driving in, the somewhat lenient Texas law doesn’t follow you around.

But mostly brakes are required because you need to give a care about the safety and well-being of everyone with whom you share the roads.

Most states requires braking systems on anything over 2000 lbs, some 1500lbs
Towed my 2004 Liberty 17 yrs with a brake buddy safely over 110,000 miles
Towing my 2022 Wrangler with Blue Ox brake system now over 15,000 miles safely.

We tow an ‘03 Liberty with a Brake Buddy Classic braking system. It came with the MH. Works great and wouldn’t be without one.
