Jeep towing mileage

Just got a 2012 Jeep Liberty. How do I keep from adding miles when I tow? I have a friend who has a 2006 and adds mileage under tow. Asked the dealer, no help there. I hah a Saturn and you had to pull a fuse. This may have been covered, I did't find it. Thanks in advance for your help.

Barski,
My guess is you have a steering wheel lock. It can be disabled with a bit of work. Then you can turn key to off and remove it. No mileage will show up.

Check the Jeep Owners manual.

You do not say if the Liberty is 4 WD, but I assume it is since 2 WD is not flat towable.

You switch the transfer case to Neutral, then put the transmission into Park and remove the key.

Since the transmission is in Park, no miles will add up on the odometer.

Directly from the 2012 Jeep Liberty Owner's Manual:

Quote:
Flat Towing Jeep Liberty
· Depress the brake pedal and turn the ignition switch to ON/RUN with the engine shut off.
· Shift the transmission into NEUTRAL.
· Shift the transfer case into NEUTRAL by holding down the NEUTRAL PIN switch for 4 seconds until the LED starts to blink. The LED will stop blinking and remain on when the shift is complete.
· Start the engine and shift into DRIVE to ensure there is no vehicle movement.
· Shut the engine off and shift the transmission into PARK.
· Place the ignition switch to the OFF position and remove the key.
· Apply the parking brake, attach the vehicle to the tow vehicle with a tow bar and release the parking brake.
The newer Jeeps (approx. 2004 and upward) do not have a steering wheel lock.

Your friend's 06 shouldn't add mileage, ours doesn't. xfr case in N/xmission in P disengages the counter.

We have a 2005 & 2002 Jeep Liberty and either one adds miles when towing. With engine running put transfer case in neutral the trans into drive to check for any movement shut off the engine then put the trans into park. Leave the key alone to keep the steering unlocked.

I have a 2012 Liberty and it does not collect mileage when towed 4 day per the owners manual.

Thanks for all your input. I have talked to the shop people where I bought the Jeep and this is what I'am told. Its 4down towable, just follow the instruction as in the owners book. It will not add mileage and it no longer locks the steering when you take the key out.

See my post #3. This is a copy and paste from the owners manual! Refer to page 80 of the owner's manual.

Yes this is all true, NO mileage being added and the NO steering wheel lock. Just make sure you DO NOT place the gear selector into Park with the engine running after you have placed the system into Neutral for flat towing. Make sure the Engine is OFF.
