Looking for my 1st Toad

New to class A camping. We have a Georgetown GT5 series gasser that has a 5,000lb limit. What am I looking for in Toad for the easiest towing setup? I’m assuming manual transmission is the easiest route to go? I’ll admit, I have very little knowledge about this, I’m just now starting my research. Thanks

Definately doesn't need to be a manual transmission.

Here is a good place to start. Each guide also has some valuable info.

We tow a Mini Cooper. Can't even tell is it's behind us so I leave the back up camera on. The nice feature is the steering column does not lock. We put it on an American Tow Dolly.
Good luck with your search!

We love our 2013 Honda CRV! They are flat-towable through the 2014 models. It's lightweight, roomy, and easy for us oldies to get in and out of!

We tow a Jeep Wrangler. Opted to flat tow so we didn't have a trailer or dolly to deal with removing/storing while parked.

We flat tow an automatic 2014 Honda CRV behind our gasser.

Make sure you do not exceed the motorhome's GCWR when considering which toad to purchase. It is not uncommon for the difference between GVWR and the GCWV to be only 4000 lbs on the gassers despite having a hitch rated for 5000 lbs. And include some extra weight to be added to the manufacturers listed weight for the toad. My CRV weight on the manufacturers specifications is about 3500 lbs., but it weighed in at 3800 lbs on the CAT scale with factory accessories and some of our personal belongings in the car.

You’ll see many Jeep Wranglers out there. Ours is an automatic 4 door. They are light enough to tow behind a gasser, they are easy to rig for towing, and easy to tow when the time comes. Using a Ready Brute and a Rock Jock tow plate, it’s an easy do it yourself project with tools you probably already have.

Hi KHBama,
You should list some wants you have in a vehicle and the suggestions can be specific. There are many many great choices (with auto trans if you wish) that are great toads. Several years ago I saw a list of the top ten (by popularity) choices & I wanna say several were Jeep models. That's probably still true today.

You really need to check out the motorhome dinghy towing guide to narrow down your picks, then research special things that must be done on given models. Some require removal of a fuse, some you must put into towing mode, or start every 200-300 miles and cycle through the gears, some can't be towed at over a certain speed.

2001 Saturn SL2. Best toad I ever had. $75 tow bar from northern, had to cut holes in the bumper, but hell it was a 2001 Saturn. Magnetic lights. Towed like a million bucks, never knew it was back there.

While you are looking for a toad make sure to consider what king of auxiliary braking system you need on it, some are easier to set up then others. But I would not pull a toad without one.

I pull a Jeep Grand Cherokee, which is easy to put into neutral when you are getting ready to tow. I installed the base plate myself along with the Brakemaster braking system.

We tow a Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk dingy and love it. I think if I had it to do all over again I’d buy a 16’ aluminum trailer to tow it instead of tow bar and all the accessories you have to buy with it. With a trailer you can back up where with a tow bar you can’t. When we get close to home we have to find a parking lot to pull in and unhook because we have to back our coach into our driveway

I'm using a 4 dr. Jeep Wrangler. It comes in under the weight you can tow plus it is fun and offers the opportunity to do exploring that a regular car can't.
