Max Tow Lengths

Looking to buy a tag axle about 42' long. Coupled with my 21.5' trailer I'm over length for a couple states. If I end up with a longer TAG I could even wind up over the 65' limit I've seen in many states.

I'm curious if anyone has had any issues with law enforcement when it comes to length restrictions. I travel for work and can't be turning down jobs just because of some random length Iaw.

I drive through Illinois frequently and their length limit is 60'.

Thanks, Steve

When I'm hooked up my rig is 60', half the states i drive through causes my Rand McNally RVND GPS to display an over-length warning. I've never been stopped or questioned. I tired of hearing and seeing that warning, so I changed my GPS length to 40' = no more warnings flashing on the screen.
IMO if a driver is paying attention to their duties, they will not attract attention to being over-length, thus avoids the consequences
There is only one circumstance where being over-length is a problem, boarding a ferry; they hand-measure every rig that boards.

I’m 73’ and never have had anybody look twice. Even after a guy side swiped my toad and the Il State Police worked the accident they never mentioned the length.
I believe it’s because they have far more important things to enforce.

It seems that RV's get a pass when it comes to length. At one time I was 73' long with no issues. My son is 76' long and we have met people who have come all the way from the east coast that were towing stackers and were 80' long. The only place they have a potential problem is in CA. However, a $15 permit from their DOT solves the problem. Their comment was that as long as they were operating within the speed limits in a safe manner, they were not questioned.

For What's It's Worth. In MY state I call KDot because I was looking at tag axle at the time and was worried about overall length. KDot explain to me that the length is the length of the coach and the length of the car/trailer not including the tongue/towbar length. Of coarse, I didn't check the other 49 states which could do total length.

I wonder what could happen if an over length rig were involved in a wreck, or worse yet, caused one? And if some one were killed in that wreck. That might get all criminal.

It would probably be no different than causing an accident due to faulty brakes, excessive speed, reckless driving, failing to yield, alcohol, or any other moving violation. Your insurance company will kick in regardless. I asked my ins company several years ago when I was at 73'. I was covered.
