Miata Toad Supplemental Braking

Looking at towing our 1990 Mazda Miata (4 down) behind our 29' Safari Trek. Car weights 2,100 pounds. Curious if others who tow their Miata have installed a supplemental braking system as part of the setup and have found one that works well. I have option to buy a used Invisbrake system but don't know that it is compatible with this car. Thanks!

You would probably be better off with an RVi3 braking system. Portable, sits on the floor, installs in <5 minutes.

We tow a miata and use the ready brake system. Its the surge brake system with a cable system attached to the brake pedal. We remove the front plate and the cable is right there attached to a bracket. Roadmaster is the only company that makes a base plate. I had to drill larger holes in the rear bracket to make it fit. I can give more details if needed.

"Frenzy"....your situation is perfect for the use of the Ready Brake system as "StvC" described. It's an all in one system, perfect for lightweight cars, inexpensive and relatively easy to install and use.

We towed a '99 around for a year or so without any sort of aux braking system and never felt unsafe. Others may disagree but that's ok. Also, believe you may be low on the weight of your '90 at 2100lb as our Spec Miata race car fully stripped with minimal fuel came in at 2075lbs. I think the NA Miata's were 2300 lb.

I have towed 3 different Miatas (2000, 2010, 2012) over a total of 75,000 miles and have never used an Aux Brake system.

I have run emergency/panic stopping distance tests with and without the Miata and measure no difference in the stopping distance.

I have also helped more than 100 other Miata owners to set their cars up for towing and do not know more than a handful who do use an Aux Brake system.

Do what you are comfortable with.

Tim

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!

I highly recommend the NSA ReadyBrake! It's the least expensive, easy to install, does the job, and is pretty much foolproof! Keep her between the ditches!

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!
