Mini Cooper and Open Car Trailer

My Mini weighs 3000 pounds and I have towed it behind my Villagio with a dolly. No problem until rough road bouncing angled the toad's wheels, loosening a strap. Might have lost my load had I not made a rest stop and saw what was happening. Want to switch to an open car trailer. Tow hitch on the MH is rated for 5000 pounds, but tow capacity is not specified. Could I get away with a 1000 pound trailer if necessary? I'm going with aluminum if I decide to make the move. Thoughts?

I towed a 2,500# Austin Healey in a 1,500# enclosed trailer from Dallas to both coasts and back.

Nothing will happen if you go a bit overweight. EVERYTHING is built with a safety factor. Usually at least 50% over.

When I worked for a Defense Contractor, we used to tow 18,000# Blackhawk helicopters all over the place with a guys personal Jeep with a 2,500# hitch on it.

One never came loose.
