QUESTION: when you say "if you try to use low range in a Wrangler..." are referring to a manual, or relating to a problem even with the auto transmission in a Wrangler???

Hill Holder eliminates braking. Manual or auto doesn't matter.
You won't "strain" a newer Wrangler; they are not grandpas Jeep anymore. 12 or later will do it.

The low range comment applies to both transmissions types. Low range will lock the front and rear differentials together forcing at least one tire to skid or spin when turning. In loose surfaces it's not a major problem but on pavement it can break an axle.

As for the downhill in 1st gear, the new 8 speed transmission does an excellent job with that, better than any automatic I have ever had.
