Need a toad

Our new coach is coming in end of next week and we are in the market for a toad... I've been leaning towards the Honda CRV but after driving in the friend of ours Ford Edge I was impressed with the finish inside as well as all the extra interior room and I was wondering if anyone is pulling around the Ford? I was also considering the Chevrolet equinox until I read about all the death wobble ...

Are you looking at new? If so, the Edge is your only choice since 2015 and newer CRVs are not flat towable and you've discounted the Equinox due to the "death wobble".

I tow a 2017 Ford Edge. It tows easily, no problems. Before disconnecting the battery we give it ten minutes for the electronics to shut down properly. Sometimes when starting to drive the edge again the check engine light comes on the first day but after the first start up day two it always fixes itself. That is the only issue we have noticed so we are quite happy with the edge.

It would be a 14 crv or a 16 or 17 edge... i'm just trying to figure out if I want to spend the extra 10 K on something that's going to be pulled behind the RV or not ...? The Ford is definitely more comfortable being 6'1" ...

Let's talk about the Death Wobble.
First and off this a case of any car with an EPS and an improper tow setup. To help factor out one of the issues, you need to ensure that there is no play in the tow setup. That is if you can grab the Tow Bar and move it side to side or up and down then you need to fix that problem first. A Roadmaster Quiet Hitch on all joints the thump will take care of that.
Now measure the height of the front bumper of the Toad prior to hook up to the MH and then measure the height of the front bumper of the Toad after it's hooked up. There should not be any change. You must also ensure that the MH is at Ride Height when making this second measurement. DP's rest at lower height than when driven down the road. If the MH is lifting the front end of the Toad when traveling down the road then Death Wobble may occur due to the suspension being unloaded.
The last thing is the Base Plates\tow bar setup on the Toad itself. The Toads that seem to have issue with the Death Wobble have Base Plates\Tow Bar setups that do NOT make a Triangle.
In other words. they only connect to the 2 points in front of the Toad. Some brands of Tow Bars have a bar that goes from one side to the other, this completes the triangle shape.
If you take care of these issues prior to towing, then there is NO Death Wobble from any of them. So don't believe the hype.

SuperGewl I beg to differ, at least in the case of the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It’s not the towing setup that causes the wobble. Everything tight, level within less than an inch and 2 different towbar and baseplate combinations my Jeep still wobbles. It’s not always the tow setup. It may be something else but the three things you mentioned are not causing it in my case.

We tow a AWD, 6 cyl, 2016 Ford Edge. No problems. Had a SMI Air Force 1 installed for braking. Use Blue Ox tow bar.

We tow a 2013 Edge with a charge line added to keep the battery charged. Only problem I have had was operator error when I drained the battery during an overnight stop when I did not turn off the ignition. Then blew the charge line fuse trying to start with it connected to the coach. We really do like the Edge and use it as my daily driver as well. Plenty of room for 4 adults and cargo space.

Mike, If I may add to the discussion. We know that FMCA has documented over 60 instances where the "wobble" has occurred in the late model GM product and we have also documented 30 forum members who have experienced the Jeep Grand Cherokee "wobble". Now, since the manufactures have not owned up to the problem, and the issue has surfaced with the implementation of the EPS, the best we can do is point to the fact the with the ignition in the off position, the BUS goes to sleep and eliminates the dampening effect from the steering system.

With regard to the tow setup, while it may play "some" part in the equation, we have also documented the "wobble" occurs with Blue Ox, Roadmaster, and Demco so I can not believe that 90 forum members all have a bad set up.

The problem is the Electronic Power Steering and for anyone looking to buy a new toad, the first thing to look for is does the vehicle have the EPS.

assuming you are looking at larger vehicles... if you are also considering smaller ones, c-max energi (or c-max hybrid) is a good one. easy tow, comfortable, quiet and getting great mileage.
