I just bought a new 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali. Before I signed on the dotted line, I made the dealer put the truck into NEUTRAL for towing, just to make sure. What a clown car experience. It took a while to figure it out.
GMC no longer gives you a paper Owner's Manual, it's incorporated into the vehicle's memory. You can bring it up on the center screen, but is difficult to find what you need, at least for an old guy like me.
NOTE: If you want a paper Owner's Manual for a GM product, you have to buy it from Helm Inc., about $60.00.
I always type out a cheater form for putting whatever vehicle I'm towing into NEUTRAL. The GMC Manual has a Recreational Tow section, but in line 2 or 3 of the procedure, it tells you to put the transfer case (2 speed) into Neutral, but you have to go to another portion of the Manual to look that up.
So, my procedure is to cut out sections of the Manual and paste it into a Word program. I then cut out the warnings and superfluous stuff.
I just spent the time to make up the cheater and tested it today. With GM vehicles, you have to disconnect the battery when done. I was surprised to see that you have to turn the ignition to Accessory (ACC) and then disconnect the battery. This is different from my 2016 Canyon that required a battery disconnect.
I installed the Roadmaster Electronic Battery Disconnect switch in my truck. It only works with gasoline powered engines. It allows you to just push a button in the vehicle and the battery will disconnect. Works great.
I also run the Demco AF1 and need power for the disconnect safety switch. I found a great ETrailer video that shows you how to wire the AF1 for power when the battery is disconnected and you're using the Roadmaster Disconnect.....it was so simple, I was embarrassed that I didn't think about it.
Here's the Neutral Tow Procedure ......
Shifting into (Neutral)
1. Apply the brake and start the engine.
2. Turn parking brake off.
3. Shift the transmission to N (Neutral).
4. Shift the transfer case to 2H.
5. With you foot on the brake, press 2H five times in 10 seconds until the N
(Neutral) graphic starts flashing in the instrument cluster. When the shift is
complete, the graphic stops flashing.
6. With the engine running, verify that the transfer case is in N(Neutral) by
shifting the transmission to D(Drive) and then to R(Reverse).
7. Shift the transmission to P(Park).
8. Turn the vehicle off with door closed.
9. Turn on the ignition without starting the engine. To do this, take your foot off
the brake pedal then press and hold ENGINE START/STOP for five
seconds until the green light on the button is illuminated.
10.Disconnect the positive (+) battery cable.
Shifting Out of (Neutral)
1. Connect positive (+) battery cable.
2. Step on the brake and start engine,
3. Shift the transmission to N (Neutral).
4. Shift the transfer case to 2H. When the shift to 2H is complete, the graphic in
the instrument cluster will stop flashing.
