What does your manual say? There should be a complete section on flat/dingy towing that specifically states the steps to take if authorized. Some do not facilitate flat towing no matter what.

Each vehicle is a little different but I've flat towed multiple US vehicles and NEVER racked up miles on the OD. I'm pretty sure there is a way to correct this feature.
