I would consult your owners manual for the proper procedure.

What procedure are you using? On my Colorado, Engine on, shift the transmission to neutral, turn the 4wd dial to N and hold it for ~15 seconds (sometimes more or less), and sometimes I have to take my foot off the brake so the tires roll a very slight amount. Be sure to set the parking brake once in Neutral and not connected to the RV. ~CA

Did you look at this?

https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q...6FORM%3DVDVVXX

Engine running
Transmission in Neutral
Emergency brake engaged
Foot on foot brake
Rotate 4x4 knob to N and hold
Wait for the shift

If one of the above is not in place, mine won't shift.

Is it a 2 speed transfer case? If not things will go boom…………. The two speeds have the “auto”

A few months back I had this happen in my Jeep and it needed a $2200 transmission repair

When I had a GMC I sometimes had the same problem. I would go back to the beginning and do everything in sequence, sometimes took 3 times to get it.

Have foot firmly on the brake during the whole process?

I have a 2016 1500 4wd , the manual is very confusing. Make sure that you are following the directions for your specific transfer case. There are at least (3) different sets of directions. Hope this helps.

2019 Suburban, my procedure is hook up, shift to neutral, foot on brake. Twist to neutral and hold until it says shifting to neutral. This can take 20+ seconds. Once it shows neutral, shift to reverse and apply throttle to make sure it really is in neutral. Once confirmed, shift gearshift back to neutral and turn off motor. Hit battery disconnect switch (installed under the dash so I don’t have to pop the hood) and shift to park and verify the steering wheel is not locked and you’re good to go.
