Rock guard

Thinking of buying the Ultra Guard rock guard to protect my car on a car tow dolly. It comes in two widths: 20” and 16”. Anyone have a suggestion as to how close to the road the guard should be?

Ultra Guard recommends a minimum of 4" between the bottom of the mud flap and the ground, to allow for bumps in the road.

I along with a number of motorhome owners have removed that big flap and have eliminated all stone damage. Some have success with it mounted 4" off the ground, however, we eliminated all damage after removing it. What's the point in having one?? My son did the same on his Mountain Air and deleted it when he ordered his Newell.

We got the ricksolid rock guard which mounts to the rear bumper. It has about 3 inch vains that over laps across the back of the rv.. The nice thing about this rock guard is the vains don't have the weight so if they touch the ground your not kicking up stones.

No issues with stones and toad with about 30k miles.

Loves ours. 4 inch really not high enough. 6 better. Put a lasp on it so you can "pin" it up if need be.

I use the UltraGuard solid rubber flap on the back of the MH to stop the big stuff, and a Protect-a-Tow mesh shield between the MH and toad to stop all the rest. Been using this combo since 2012 with no damage to the front of the toad!

Here is a cheap fix that eliminates the need for a "hanging billboard".
We do have a "hula skirt" full width at the back though. Just in case.

I installed one from the OEM manuf. on my first tow I found pebbles and small rocks at the base of the windshield. On my second longer tow to CO. I found more rocks at the base of the windshield and on the roof along the roof rails. I also had a broken out fog lamp as well as small rock chips all over the front bumper.
I looked at the aftermarket versions. But by the time you got all the hardware needed to hang it. I was better off going with a rock guard from future sales.

They supply the manuf with all of the OEM rock guards. Came with everything needed to install it. I’ve since towed over 15k miles with no more damage to the toad. And I have no more pebbles or rocks on the car. Money well spent!

Personally, I think the big flap can do more harm than good. With our original flap from Tiffin, I had stone damage as high as 5' up the front of a custom painted enclosed trailer. The flap had plenty of clearance from the road and no signs on the bottom that it ever touched the road when traveling. I thing it has a downdraft effect that gets small rocks airborne to hit anything behind. My son had the same with his setup. After $800 repair/repaint of the trailer, I removed the flap and in the ensuing 12,000 miles, not a single chip on the trailer when I sold it. My son did the same with the same results. As an added safety measure for my white Avalanche toad, I use the Protect-a-Tow, but have towed without it and no damage.

We removed ours after a partial failure in the middle of Cleveland. Scary if it had totally cut loose. I don’t see the need, but have read a number of accounts of these flaps creating flying stones. Can anyone tell me if this is truly anything more than advertising?

I had the opposite. I had damage to my Explorer without the guard. With the guard, no more damage. I wouldn’t tow without one!

I’m just asking

Why not something like this?
