Setting up a toad on a small dolly

Hello folks. Even tho I am a full timer and should know most of it, I would like to ask for some help. I have a small toad and dolly. I use wood ramps at the beginning of the ramps, but I still occasionally catch the bottom of the toad on the strap bars. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Yeah, hitch height affects the dolly angle, as does slight height differences in the road surface. One or both of those is probably why you scrape only some of the time. Try experimenting some with angle - you can usually alter it a few inches using a tongue-jack on the dolly to lift it a bit. Or uncouple and lower it a bit. Level may not be your best angle for loading.

We towed a Buick Verano one year and it had low air dams up front. It couldn't take much angle at all. I had to adjust the dolly angle more level and use a multiple board ramp to ease the car onto to it.

Uncoupling a dolly for loading or unloading could cause serious problems, hitch jumping in the air or the dolly going out from under the car as you try to drive up on it. Mine warns to always have it hooked up before loading or unloading.

I had a similar problem with the spoiler/lip catching the dolly, especially when backing off. Twice, the whole front bumper/facia got ripped off of the car. My solution was to sell the car and dolly and get a car that I could tow 4-down. I'm not advocating that you do this. But, you should check to see if the "spoiler" can be easily removed from your car. (Mine couldn't.) This could give you the extra clearance that you need for most trailering situations.
