Shifting a Wrangler back into gear
We just did our first trip with the new 2015 Wrangler Willys. Just a test run to check it out. We copied some great instruction from someone here (can't remember who but thanks) on shifting the transfer case out of neutral and back into gear. First try we decided to use the owners manual and they actually have instructions for towing behind a MH. Here is a c&p of part of it.
Shifting Out of NEUTRAL (N)
Use the following procedure to prepare your vehicle for
normal usage.
1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop, leaving it connected
to the tow vehicle.
2. Firmly apply the parking brake.
3. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
4. Turn the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position, but
do not start the engine.
5. Press and hold the brake pedal.
6. Shift the transmission into NEUTRAL.
7. Shift the transfer case lever to the desired position.
Everything went great until number 6. We found that it is not possible to shift back into gear without the engine running. The instructions we got from the forum say to have the engine running. Am I missing something? BTW it is an automatic trans.

Woops. That is the number I should have said. "7. Shift the transfer case lever to the desired position." With the trans shifter in N and the engine running the transfer case shifts into gear no problem.
Thinking about calling Jeep.

Don't know if it helps but I went thru the same deal on my 2012 Wrangler with the new 3.6 L Pentastar engine and automatic transmission ( NSG370 made by Mercedes), which I think is same as current model. Here's what I do.....
To Tow
1. Engine running in park
2. Foot on brake, shift transmission to neutral
3. Move transfer case to neutral. A lot of times I have to go all the way aft on the lever into 4 Low, witness the ESC light and Traction Control lights, then move the transfer knob one notch forward.
4. Move transmission into Reverse, slightly rev engine, insure it does not move Jeep, move transmission to Drive, lightly rev motor, insure Jeep does not move.
-----very important next step----
5. Turn off motor with Jeep in Drive. With engine off return transmission to Park.If you try to move transmission to Park with engine running you will "clash" the gears...not pleasant sound. Jeep is ready to tow. Remove keys. Hit lock button manually on driver door. Do not arm alarm.
To drive Jeep after towing.
1. Start engine
2. Foot on brake move transmission to neutral
3. Shift Transfer case forward to 2 HI. Sometimes the gears are in a position where it won't go. Sometimes I have to go to 4 Low first.
4. Turn off engine. Shift transmission into Park.
5. If you couldn't get Jeep into 2HI first effort, do it now. Start engine. Move Jeep a little, stop, hold foot on brake, move Transfer lever to 2 HI.
I have been doing the above for over 25,000 towed miles without damage.
Be careful being to aggressive on Transfer Case lever. At the bottom of the lever there is a $.50 plastic clip that is easy to break. Here's a pic of the part....

Thanks Dave. That is similar to another guide by a Wrangler owner, not Jeep that I have. I saved it and will print it to put in the glove box.
I'm still wondering why they have the instructions in the manual that don't work.
BTW when I tried to give the lever brute force DW was smart enough to stop me. Might have been buying one of those plastic clips.

I'm not sure I may have read my shift information from one of those revised guides. Either mark out or edit the paper Manual to be correct.

Most Jeep guys on the Jeep forums recommend stopping at the Jeep dealer and buying a couple of those plastic clips and throw them in the glove box. They are literally like about $.50 ea. Search Wrangler Forum for how to change that clip and read it a few times before you try it. Most often it will break in a rain shower in the dead of night.

Andy, Thanks, I c&p the instructions from the manual I had just downloaded from Jeep so I'm hoping it is the latest.
Dave, I did some reading and am a forum member at wranglerforum.com. The plastic bushings look like either a bad engineering idea or cheap out on Jeeps part. I wrote down the part number and will get one or two. Still under warranty with RSA for now but will be nice to have on hand. Will make me think twice before forcing the shifter.
I must say the trial tow was stressful. Went to turn right into an intersection in a fairly rural area when a truck with a trailer pulled up to the light on the side street. Pretty narrow lanes and he rolled right up past the stop line. I needed much more than my lane of course. Fortunately he went thorough the light and the nice lady behind him pulled off to the side to give me room. I also can notice the Wrangler behind me much more than the old Tracker that weighed about half as much.

I have been carrying those clips for six years now. I assume that is why I have not had a failure.
Yah, the key is to not force the transfercase.
One of the things I do after I am all hooked up is to restart the engine and put the transmission into Drive. Nothing should happen if the transfercase is in neutral. Turn off the engine and let it stop before putting it into Park.
