SMI AFO & Spartan K3

I have a new Newmar on order, its coming on the K3 Spartan chassis. They have the aux air port at the hitch for air brake trailers and says toad systems as well. I can't find any information as to whether or not I can just use this port for the SMI air connection, or do I still need to add the SMI air tank and connection to coach. I called SMI and the person I spoke to wasn't 100% but thinks it might be ok, will call Spartan tomorrow. Anyone with any knowledge it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Brad

My guess is it will work fine and already has the breakaway installed. When you purchase the SMI setup you would not need the coach side so should save you some money.

For any others in the same situation or contemplating the same. I spoke directly with Spartan this morning and their response was different than expected. He advised me the air port supplied to the rear of the coach in 2017 was not for towed vehicle or trailers with air brakes, but to be used for airing the coach up from outside source if needed or airing up tires etc. But for 2018 Newmar opted for the Spartan Safe Haul option which places a second air port at the rear for connecting your toad or air braked trailer. So if your thinking about the SMI AFO, he says the coach portion from SMI is not needed. I believe, but as usual always want to wait to pass full judgement until when I see it in person.

Congratulations on taking delivery of your MADP. I have a MADP w/Spartan chassis on order with FPU the first week of December. Did everything work out okay with the use of the SMI AFO system? Were any coach modifications required? It's my understanding that the Spartan Safe Haul feature is standard on the 2018 MA. Can you confirm? Thanks.

I can confirm that the Spartan Safe Haul is standard on MA,LA,ESX and KA, but I'm unable to tell you how it works with my toad. We flew out and are driving my toadless back to Cal. I can update in the future.

Connecting Air lines from Toad to Safe Haul on LA

I am using Roadmaster Brakemaster in our Jeep (Toad) the air lines are 1/4" and the connection on the spartan chassis is 3/8". I have searched high and low for some type of an adapter. What have others done?
Thanks for any help!

Brad, Any issue with hooking up your toad with SMI AFO to your MH with Spartan K3 chassis?

Nope hooked up with little to no issues. I have a 05 Dodge Ram 4x4 currently as my toad, won't be our long term toad but its paid for and easy to hook up. I did the entire install of all components to hook it all up. The only issue that arises between the AF1 and the Spartan Safe Haul is the air line are not compatible without a few adapters. The air chuck exiting the coach is much larger than the supplied AF1 line. A quick trip to Lowes to the Gas line aisle and 3 small pieces later I was in business. Hooked up great and functioned flawlessly on our first tow trip a few weeks ago. Brad

Thanks for the update. Hopefully it will save me the last minute scramble as we plan on driving the toad to the factory and towing it back. Iím currently debating on whether to have the toad outfitted before heading to the factory (the SMI authorized dealer is about an hour from our home) or having the work done at Danís Service Center as others have highly recommended. Thanks again.
