Suggestions for Wrangler flat tow wiring harness
Steve. Here’s how I’m looking at it. Hoping for the best.
The JK has a belt driven hydraulic steering system which is not active during towing. The JL has an electronic driven hydraulic steering system also not active during towing. Hoping that the 2 types are a wash.

Called hopkins yesterday they have nothing yet.

Not only did Jeep upgrade its transmission for the 2018 Wrangler JL, but designers also made steering a bit easier and more stable thanks to a new electro-hydraulic system.
Previous JK Wranglers used hydraulic power steering which, in part, helped ease steering through the transfer of hydraulic fluid by the vehicle’s speed and amount of torque applied to the wheel. However, the addition of larger tires meant more muscle was needed to steer the vehicle – especially off road.
Electro-hydraulic power steering delivers a more natural steering feel and actually improves fuel economy. The steering system’s pump draws power from an electric motor that activates when it senses driver input and applies a variable amount of torque to assist the driver while steering.
This motor works with an adaptive engine control unit to monitor steering speed, steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This allows for variable amounts of steering assistance to be applied when more is needed at low speeds, such as when off road, or less when at highway speeds.
The JL Wrangler’s steering knuckles also face outward into the wheel envelopes which improves steering stability while braking and enhances steering input, including bump steer when going over uneven surfaces.
According to Jeep, all this will improve steering stability and overall turning radius to where the vehicle steering wheel can go from lock-to-lock in 3.5 turns for 2-door models and 3.2 turns for 4-door models.
I would think if the engine isn't running then the steering would be straight hydraulic which shouldn't require any type of external assist.

OK,
Now, I've read both posts above and, I'm confused. Lawdawg HAS a JL in his possession and, states it has NO ELECTRONIC power steering.
But, according to BobGes quote from a brochure, the '18s DO come with electronic power steering. Hmmmmm. What am I missing here?

Although this isn’t the total fix you could go to Harbor Frieght and buy their towing lights with a magnetic base wire it to the six pin connector and put the lights on the side of the rear quarter panels. Problem solved until a harness is available.

I have went under and over the steering system and have yet to find any electric functions at all in the steering system. You can see clearly the steering gear box and two power steering hydraulic hoses Connected to it. Thats all that is connected. I will get a better chance to study it tomm when i put on my aftermarket bumper and will report back

JMHO guys, the power steering fluid still needs a pump to turn the wheel. Before they gave the electric power steering pump that fancy Electro-Hydraulic handle. The pump was powered by a pulley and the fan belt.
The fuel mileage claim is because you no longer have a belt driven PS fluid pump so you will get that benefit.
The fluid needs a pump weather it is electric or mechanical.

I found these harnesses that seem to fit the bill, at least the first three do. If I am indicating my lack of understanding please bring me up to speed. I will be needing a Toad shortly and was leaning toward a GC so I have some skin in the game here also.
Thanks.

If you’re looking at the GC as a toad, you will want to do a search for “Grand Cherokee Wobble”. Jeep does not have a solution for the EPS.
I’m looking to trade a perfectly good 2017 Summit for the JL.

Has anyone installed the older version of the 82215382 harness into the JK series Wrangler. Is it just a pigtail connecting to the toad 6 pin or do you have to run additional wires to the tail lights. What is the install process????
Can’t find any pictures of it on line.

I’ll decide by the end of the week. Still waiting for my company discount code to see how much I’ll save. 1% below invoice sounds good.
Thanks for the harness install info on the other thread, I don’t want to do that.

JL Flat Towing

I have a 2018 JWUJL Rubicon that I want to flat tow. The Owners manual states the power steering is a hybrid, combination of hydraulic and electric assist. I too am uncertain about the wobble issue. Mopar rep tells me the new part, Part Number flat tow: 82215382, which will be available after May 1st is specific for JL flat towing but could not specifically describe what all this wiring is intended to do. You would think Mopar would know more about their parts.
