Supply Chain

Well this isn't good news. Read this today 7/1/22

"During the second quarter of 2022, General Motors Company's vehicle wholesale volumes were impacted by the timing of certain semiconductor shipments and other supply chain disruptions.

As a result, we had a total of approx 95 thousand vehicles in our inventory that were manufactured without certain components as of June 30, 2022, a majority of which were built in June. We expect that substantially all of these vehicles will be completed and sold to dealers before the end of 2022

That’s a lot of vehicles. Certainly explains why the dealer lots are empty or nearly so. However GM manufactures in excess of 6 million vehicles per year. I’m sure that the company along with most others are working hard to fix the problem.
I’m thinking that a big part of the issue is the just in time supply system. Thoughts?

To me it sounds like the "Supply Chain" problem is Status Quo for the past 2+ years.

When you build several million vehicles a year, any supply process is continuous and essentially "just in time". There isn't enough enough warehouse space to stockpile even a month's worth of production parts, nor will your suppliers have enough lead time to pre-build and deliver several months of production parts.

Makes you wonder what build date these vehicles will have on them, the date the unit was originally started or the date the last component was installed.
