TOAD ignition

The key has to be in the ignition to unlock the steering. What do you do when you stop and leave the rig unattended?

I have a 2003 Saturn Vue. I modified the steering column so it never locks. I don't need to leave the key in the ignition, so we usually travel with the doors locked.

three things to consider:

1) I've disconnected the power by way of a battery disconnect switch

2) The Corolla's front tires are strapped to the ACME tow dolly as well as a safety chain attached to the tow loop under the car.

3) the removed ramps have to be put back in place to get the car off of the dolly.

Given the above items, I'm not two worried about theft fo the car.

I have a 2007. How did you do this?

I assume most new vehicles are similar but the Honda CRV comes with a Blank Key that will turn the ignition on and actually start the engine momentarily but will not run. It also manually locks and unlocks the doors from outside.
I have the normal programmed ignition key on to Acc, per the owners manual, to keep the steering unlocked.
Then I use the blank key to manually lock the doors from the outside.

I have locks on all my towbar connections. Hope that will stop the less determined from taking the CR-V!

Good point, I also have locking pins on the tow bar and on the receiver pin.

But I think the OP's concern was more toward being able to lock the car doors when parked let's say while shopping at Wallyworld.

Went to lowes and had a key made with no chip in it

I have a 2007. How did you do this?

My 2003 is a GM passlock system. I disassembled the locking mechanism and removed the steel paw that engages the steering column.

If I were doing this again, I now know how this is assembled so rather than disassemble, I'd drill a 3/16 inch hole through the assembly (and through the paw) and get one of those removable pins and just insert it in the hole. This would prevent the paw from moving and engaging the column.

ALSO - If you can visit a junk yard and buy an assembly, this will allow you to experiment.

WELL; Turns out all I need to do is use the second regular ignition key to lock the doors manually. 2012 Honda CRV.

Lock car doors, then insert key and turn to lock drivers door. I do that before towing the CR-V and the Odyssey before that.

I also have a 2007 view. The steering wheel does not lock. You don't have to do anything.

Well,
Seems pretty easy to me. You've stopped and parked your coach, you're going to go away from it for a while so, that means you're not towing it at present so, the steering doesn't need to be "un locked" while you're not towing. Remove the key, lock the doors, go away.

Come back, unlock the doors, insert key, turn to position of steering unlock, start towing. Simple. At least this is what I interpreted you asking.
