Toad Jeep Wrangler Wiring Harness

I saw this harness and it looks like a great solution that does not require cutting and splicing the OEM harness. The diodes are built into the plug and play harness.

Does anyone have any experience with this harness ? I see it is available for many models of vehicles.

Yes, I believe I installed the same cable on my Honda CRV. Look the part up on etrailer.com and they should have an installation video so you know what you're getting into. It's not a horrible install, but lot's of laying around on your back and fishing wires thru.

It worked great on my Honda and I would assume it will be fine for the JL or Gladiator. Not sure if it's important if you have LED lights in the Jeep or not. Probably not.

Same here. The JL has a frame with large openings that make it easy to fish the wire from behind the front tire to the tail end of the frame.

Yup - it’s the one we installed on our JL. Works great. No complaints. When you do the drivers side, there’s a screw holding two metal pieces together right where the wire goes up toward the light. Turned out to be the perfect spot to attach the white ground wire. Used zip ties and wire loom to run it up the drivers side. Used the first opening I found in the frame and ran it up inside the frame rail to the engine compartment. Neat and out of the way. Choosing the route to use took more time than installing it.

I also used a t-tap to run a wire from the 7 wire on the Jeep’s trailer harness to run a wire inside the coach to tell me when the toads brakes are applied. Getting to the brake switch inside the Jeep was not possible. Ran them both through the same loom and up to a 6 way I installed in the base plate.

I spoke with an installer who has installed many of these, he was telling me there is not actually any diodes in this system although it states it on the packaging. He said he has installed it and had feedback to the system and now he always installs diodes into this harness not the OEM wiring to ensure no feedback.

Has anyone experienced this issue.

Thanks
Rick

These plug an play solutions have been around for a long time and have an attractive price point. It USED to be relatively straightforward for these kit to simply isolate the current going to the bulb and insure (through the use of diodes) that current doesn't backfeed into the ECU and cause problems that could range from strange to very severe. But, here's the problem. Many modern cars (including the Jeep Wrangler) have LED rear lights either as standard equipment or as an option. When the OEM uses LED lights they are also obliged to still be able to detect when a light fails and give you notification on the dash. The issue is that to do this with an LED circuit, there is a THIRD wire going to the LED. You will have Positive, Negative, and Fault Sense wires. The issue is that these manufacturers ARE NOT isolating (with diode protection) this third, Fault Sense wire. As such the ECU has a loop - from the positive wire to the LED and BACK to the ECU through this Fault Sense wire. If you have LED lights and you are experiencing anomalies - including a dead battery on the towed vehicle, it is probable that this is the cause.
