Toad protector

Haven’t towed a car for a while but starting again and Looking for opinions on protection for my toad. I’m leaning towards the Protect-a-Tow as I’ve used it in the past and it worked well. Just wondering what else people are using and their experiences.

I have the Roadmaster Tow Defender. Just made a 1000 mile trip and very pleased with it.

You might check this thread. Apologies, but it's 125 pages long and I don't know where to tell you to start, except at the beginning.

Mike (@zmotorsports) could probably point you in the right direction if you ask in his thread. Also, he has quite an extensive thread over at Garage Journal, which details what he did (it's even longer). Long story short, he added some "mudflaps" to the front of his Jeep (in front of his tires), which keeps rocks from flying up and into the rear of his coach and on top of the Jeep. He also has some sort of net he uses. Pretty good setup.

I've had the Roadmaster Tow Defender for 2+ years. No complaints and no pitting on my TOAD. If you decide on a protector, ensure you will be able to hook it up to your existing setup.

Good luck

What will you be towing the toad behind?
It seems to make a difference in terms of potential damage, also folks with the same rig may provide useful insight.

I have the Tow Car Shield from RVandOffRoad.com for over 20 years now. It is a leather-like material that is fit specifically for a car make and model that covers both the front and the windshield. It is also guaranteed for life and they do stand by it as I have sent mine in for repairs and they did it for no cost.

Good luck
I bought mine used as a complete package with tow bar, brake unit and a Jeep baseplate. My Equinox baseplate tow bar connection pins were at a different width than the Jeep, so I simply made stand offs that U-bolted to the pins for the wider spread I needed.

Have read some shield styles effect the airflow to the TOADS tranny and cause the trannys to get hot, so keep that in mind.

What do you intend to tow? If it's a low-slung car with a lot of painted surfaces up front, you'll need something. If it's a Jeep or truck, you may not need anything as they sit high and are not typically subject to damage.

Went with Protect-a-Tow

I decided on the Protect-a-Tow, it offers the best protection at the best price. It’s simple to connect and disconnect and so compact to store. Thanks for all the input!

As for experiences, never had any damage towing my 2013 GMC Acadia Denali.

For protection,
I do have rear dually mud flaps and a full width rock guard.

If you mainly drive on pavement the amount of damage to your car will come from when driving the car, not the RV especially if you have mud flaps.

I only drive on pavement and believe me the mud flaps are not enough. This is from experience but perhaps each coach and toad is different but I’ll never tow again with just a mud flap.
