Usually, it is transfer case in neutral, and tranny in gear/park; I leave my manual in 3rd. The reason for this is to keep the input side of the xfer case/output side of the tranny from spinning by fluid induced rotational forces from the spinning output side of the xfer case. Most transmissions, manual and automatic, get their lubrication from their spinning input side. Many xfer cases get their lube from the spinning output.
