Angry Toad turn signals, brake lights and flashers when hooked up don’t work

I have a 2020 Winnebago View D and tow a 2009 Smart Fortwo….the problem I’m having is when the vehicles are connected I get error messages on the main dash “Trailer Turn Signal Left”, “Trailer Brake Lamp”, “Trailer Turn Signal Right” and the blinkers display at a faster rate than normal. And of course none of the lights will then work on the Smart car (i.e. turn on the View’s turn signal and nothing lights up on the Smart car and same for brake lights, flashers, etc.). However, when the Smart car is disconnected from the View all of its lights work fine and there are no burned out bulbs (and none on the View either). I’ve checked out the trailer socket, 7 to 6 cable and the socket on the Smart car and the continuity is good. Nothing else seems amiss, at least that I can see so it doesn’t appear as though any of the connections are grounding out. I’ve exhausted my level of knowledge here and very much open to suggestions…….

Is there a solid ground connection between vehicles? Over 80% of all 12V issues are the result of a poor/missing ground.

Quick question as I had a similar issue when initially wiring my toad. Have you grounded the toad side of the wiring to the toad chassis? My ground seemed ok through the 6 way when I checked it, but my chassis ground wasn’t complete.

Welcome to iRV2! Keep reading and searching here as you will learn more here than anywhere else about RVing and towing.

As noted, the first thing to check is the grounding between the vehicles. You don't say whether or not this is a new problem or whether your toad lights worked previously behind this coach or another. If your toad was towed behind a different coach, it is also possible that the wiring on this coach is different. You may also want to check the pinouts between the vehicles.

Good luck and safe travels!

The View is built on an M-B chassis, which supposedly doesn't like LED trailer lights, with symptoms like what you're describing.

I have a hitch cargo box with LED lights, and they work fine on my 2017. I actually ordered it without the LED "upgrade" just for that reason, but got LED lights anyway. But perhaps the next-gen Sprinter is different. Something to look into at least.
