For 3 car seats and I'm sure a bunch of other kid friendly stuff, I'd buy a used minivan and put it on a dolly. I've done both type of towing and for a family on a budget, the dolly/van would be the way to go.

It's not glamorous having a minivan but as the kids age, hearing "she's touching me" every 5 minutes isn't either.

Look into a Mazda 5. If he'll learn to drive a manual you can flat tow as is. Seats 6 but is small and light. They're cheap too.

I wish my husband would learn to drive stick. I know how to drive a stick because my first car was a 1990 Jeep Wrangler (only a year older then me, ). How my husband made it through the 80's without learning at least basics of a manual transmission I'll never know
