I am doing the same thing, and are really interested in the Honda Fit, Honda CRV, and Ford Focus. All can be towed four down and are relatively light.

We bought a Ford C-Max SE Hybrid yesterday. So far, it is really a fun ride. Plan to use it as a toad for our Sunseeker 3010DS.

We picked a Honda Fit automatic. We use a BlueOx baseplate and towbar. The baseplate install was pretty easy.
The Fit is small and space is at a premium to work under the hood. For that reason we chose an RVi brake and use the TowBuddy light connection set (a Fit specific kit is available). I also added a ToadCharge system to keep the battery charged. I could have pulled a fuse but it is kind of hard to get to.
The automatic is easy to tow - just follow the instructions in the car manual. Nothing special to do except run it for a few minutes before you start and stay below 65 mph. You really don't notice the Fit is back there when you are towing.

I am just setting up a CRV (2008) for a WB Vista 2008, so far using Blue Ox and SMI Stay in Play Duo

We've been looking for quite sometime now. We started by reviewing the 2012 Dinghy Guide, and REMCO. We narrowed our search this week to the Honda CR-V, the Ford Edge, and the Jeep Wrangler...
We did a test drive in the CR-V and was not overly impressed by the 4 cylinder engine. We did a test drive in the Ford Edge and found it to be a worthy prospect in our search. So we are down to the Jeep Wrangler (easiest to set-up and tow) and the Ford Edge.

I've had an automatic escort with remco pump, ford focus with manual transmission and now a Honda CRV
I did like the focus 3 door hatchback, fun little car but I like the CRV better.
AWD when needed works well, the 4 cylinder has enough pep to get around .. it's not going to break any 0 to 60 records but it is no slouch either. If you need it go to the floor and let the honda rev. It gets better gas mileage also.
Ford Chassis in the Allegro does great towing. Pulls the mountains no problem.
I went with the roadmaster 9700 brake and like it. Reason I went with it is because I have been changing tow cars every few years and also it is activated only when I activate the MH brakes and not by any type of pendulum or sensor.
Roadmaster has a new one out that looks good also that can stay in place.

I just purchased a chevy Cruze LS, ( 6 speed Manual) only 3100 # and the cost was only $17,000. I like the size and comfort of the Cruze. Also I have been driving it around locally and like the mileage. If you look at the Cruze only the LS, 1LT,2LT are the models to get.
