Tow dolly

Does anyone use a tow dolly to tow the newer vehicles that the steering wheel will not lock( push button start). If so how do you lock the steering wheel so it doesn't turn.

The biggest problem with a tow dolly is where to store it when in a CG.

I have a non-swiveling dolly and so my toad's column must be unlocked and the wheels able to turn. This was a problem as our column locks without a key. My solution was to get a second key copy made but not program it to the car. So we tow down the road with a key in the toad's ignition. It will crank the engine but it will never start.

If you use a swiveling dolly then tie the steering wheel off like with a Demco strap. I like our non-swiveling dolly as I can stand it on end behind or beside the camper and it then takes hardly any room.

A simple way is to wrap the seat belt around the steering wheel and latch it. Then run the seat back to tighten it.

I don't know, maybe I'm a tad quirky, but I cannot imagine why anyone would tow with a dolly. I have over many years watched guys wrestle with that doily when pulling into a CG for a few days, then try and find a place to stow it. So many really nice vehicles out there that can be towed four down. I've towed a Sidekick, Ford Ranger, Jeep Wrangler and now have been towing a mini since 2012 that gets 42 MPG, only weighs 2500#, doesn't need lights or auxiliary brake. I guess to each his own. Sorry but I can't help you.

Often the driver seat belt can be used to immobilize the steering wheel (see crasher's reply). That worked very well when we towed a 2013 Buick Verano one season. The Demco strap is good alternative if your seat belt doesn't do the job well.

I reckon you got to go with what you got. It’s all about the $$’s, I think.
