Tow Dolly and Supplemental Brakes

I'm considering a Demco KarKaddy SS tow dolly with brakes. Do I need a supplemental brake system or are the brakes on the tow dolly everything I'll need? I know the tow dolly as brake/turn signal lights. Should I also rig up to have the lights on my toad light up as well. Thank you in advance.

The tow dolly brakes are all that's required in most places. You can ask about in your state/province.

I have magnetic lights to put on any vehicle I tow on my dolly. But that's very seldom because I'm much happier towing flat.

Just dolly brakes. You could never balance the dolly brakes to the toads rear brakes.

Been dolly towing for 9 years and never had an issue with just dolly fender lights.

For all the years we dolly towed , we only used dolly brakes in fact I never heard of anyone additionally using the car brakes .. a non issue. Also the dolly lights were all that’s legally needed. Dolly towing rules are not the same as trailer towing.

The tow dolly brakes are sufficient. However tow dollies come with 2 basic brake types. Type one has a hydraulic surge brake that is self contained on the tow dolly. Type two has electric brakes that are controlled by a brake controller mounted in the motorhome/tow vehicle or mounted somewhere on the tow dolly usually on the tongue.

You need to know which type brakes the dolly you buy has and equip your tow vehicle or tow dolly accordingly.

I dolly towed with a KarKaddy SS for 11 years and never had an issue with anything related to towing, brakes, or lighting. I personally think that this is one of the best dollies you can buy. The galvanized construction, the ability to fold it up for storage, the steerability, the surge braking, and the overall construction makes it a very solid towing solution.

Demco makes good quality stuff... I use their Excalibar-3 towbar and baseplates currently...

The Kar Kaddy dolly have an integrated surge brake already so you are good.

Actually the need for supplemental tow dolly lights depends on the state you live in. Just like some states do require a title / registration for a tow dolly and some don't (Florida), some states do require supplemental lighting when the tow dolly has a car on it and is being used if that towed vehicle extends more than 3-8 feet (varies upon state) past the dolly's lighting. Best bet would be good to the "University of Google" and look up the particular laws in your state.

As far as plates on a tow dolly, the states that require them only require them when towing it empty.

In most states it falls under towed equipment, like small cement mixers and stump grinders on wheels.
