Question Tow Dolly need tag in NC??

Does anyone on this forum know If you have to title and tag a tow dolly? I searched NC DMV and can't seem to find anything about a tow dolly only trailers and I don't know if they consider a tow dolly a trailer.

Someone told me that because the car has a plate, you don't need a plate for the tow dolly. Just want to make sure!!

No.

See: G.S. 20-51

(10) Devices which are designed for towing private passenger motor vehicles or vehicles not exceeding 5,000 pounds gross weight. These devices are known generally as "tow dollies." A tow dolly is a two-wheeled device without motive power designed for towing disabled motor vehicles and is drawn by a motor vehicle in the same manner as a trailer.

Best luck

Probably does need a tag, as our state and local gov will do anything for a buck. On the other hand, don't tag it and IF you ever get pulled over, tell them you borrowed it from your brother who lives in SC, where I understand tags are not required.

------This is a purely hypothetical answer and is by no means a recommendation to break any laws----

The part Scarab0088 left out of his quote of the N.C. regulations was, "Exempt from registration." Since your state doesn't require a tag, you'd be legal in other states you travel through.

Thanks to all you guys. Was telling BFlinn181 that if I'd called NC DMV and asked they'd say yes it would have to be registered and tagged....This way I'd have to pay personal property tax on it. Burgman50 is correct in stating our state will do anything for a buck....NC is in a downward spin!!
