Tow dolly registration??
Hi to all,
In Florida, does anyone know if a two wheel dolly needs to be registered as a trailer or are they exempt from plates, title and sales tax.
Thanks in advance for any response.
Bob.

I'm trying to recall from several years ago, so I could be way off base. I'm from NH, which doesn't require dolly registration. We snowbird in Florida and towed our car on the dolly. While the car is on the dolly, the dolly does not require it to be registered. The car acts as the registration. However, the dolly needed new tires, so I towed it to the tire store. I believe that the dolly, in this case (no car on board), requires a registration in Florida. Mine wasn't registered, but went to the tire store anyway and didn't get caught!

In TX, no registration or plates/tags required, but pay sales tax when you buy one.

I asked at a FL DMV office to be sure. Florida does NOT consider a tow dolly to be a vehicle, so there is no title and no registration tag required.

It totally depends on your state of residency. Some places require it to be registered and tagged, others do not. Check with your local authorities.
Texas does not require tags on a tow dolly, but do on a utility trailer.

Look it up, most states say no tag on a dolly, just like a towed behind morter mixer.
I have used a tow dolly since 2014 with no tags as a Resident of NJ, FL, and now NY.
One state up in the north west does, but so what. Who gets stopped anymore.
I had my windshield replaced and I no longer display my reg or emissions inspection stickers. Nobody notices.

Thanks again to all responses.
I checked with the Florida DMV today, and you're all correct. Dollies do not need registration or tags. Also, what surprised me was the vehicle being towed doesn't need a tag either. The only unit needing a reg. and tag in this configuration is the vehicle doing the towing. This is what I was handed by the DMV.
/TOW DOLLY is a type of hitch not intended to be used to carry a load, but only manufactured to pull another motor vehicle.
A tow dolly does NOT require registration nor does the vehicle it is transporting. However, the towing vehicle must be currently registered./
I guess that clears that up. Safe travels.
