Towable 4 down EV's. So far just Rivian. Would you buy an EV SUV Toad

Rivian has replied to a customer inquiry that their vehicles will be towable for down. So both their truck and the RSI SUV. However, that SUV will be competing with the Tesla model X. So big bucks. But I'm thinking if Rivian can do it maybe Tesla can do it with their more reasonably priced model Y. It would be nice to tweet Elon and give him some indication on interest level of a reasonably priced SUV that can be towed four down behind a motorhome. It may be just a software thing. If Rivian can do it maybe Tesla can. Thoughts?

I think the model 3 is a little too low to make a good toad. But technically they are almost the same as the model Y so if one can be done probably the other can as well.

According to the company rep I talked to at CES this year, the electric Fisker SUV will be flat towable as well.

That is good to hear. I haven’t seen much on the Fisker SUV. I’ll have to do some digging. Did they have a prototype at CES? If so, what did you think?

The only EV (plug in hybrid) that was flat towable was the Ford C-Max energy. They stopped making them last year. It could travel ~23 miles on electric only. You see them at RV parks every once in a while.

I’m sorry to hear they quit making them. Our neighbours down south hav one. They love it. They do a lot of their miles on electric only.

It looks like Rivian will have the only 4 down towable SUV on the market. Just not enough demand for Tesla to develop the software to make it happen for the model Y which would be a perfect sized SUV for towing four down. I think someone from the Tesla motors forum tweeted Elon on the subject but no word back yet.

In my opinion complicating things by trying to have it charge while rolling is not worth it. My wife’s model 3 has a “neutral” completely free wheeling position. It literally just rolls like any gasser. So that part can be done. The problem is all the safety features that need to be surpassed by not having someone in the seat. Eg

No weight in the drivers seat.
Seat belt not done up.
No control input.

This kind of thing freaks the Tesla out and makes the car pull over, stop and put on its hazard lights. That would be a BIG problem.

Updated info on Fisker. Prototype was at CES.

Fisker Ocean Status.

Fisker Inc. is gearing up for the final phase of development, tooling and commercialization of its first vehicle, the all-electric Fisker Ocean. Over 22,000 people from 116 countries have shown interest in the 2022 Fisker Ocean EV, with majority of paid reservations coming from North America. We continue to receive reservations daily. In the aftermath of the COVID-19 crises, we believe private transportation will gain traction over shared mobility, and people will be looking for vehicles that unite utility, sustainability and affordability. The Fisker Ocean is designed and engineered with all these attributes in mind. The Fisker Ocean is on target to enter production end of next year (2021), starting high volume ramp up and deliveries in second half of 2022.

The Fisker Ocean base price is confirmed at $37,499 and will be offered with 4 different package options, to be detailed in Q4 of 2020. Fisker Ocean will also be offered via a lease option starting at $379 per month with $2,999 down, no fixed lease term and no time limit on warranty during the lease period.
Fisker Inc. will announce its manufacturing strategy in Q3 2020. Initially, the Fisker Ocean will be launched in USA and Europe.
Purchase or lease is done directly through the Fisker App. Available on iOS and Android platforms or through the Fisker Inc. Website.
Fisker Inc. will sell the vehicle direct to our customers and vehicles will be showcased at experience centers and test drives booked through our app. On-board vehicle diagnostics will signal any vehicle faults and all service scheduling will be enabled through an easy to use customer app, where your vehicle will be picked up and delivered directly from your preferred location.
The Fisker Ocean will have 250-300 mile electric range and an international CCS 2 charging plug.

Sounds like they intend to use the same sales approach as Tesla which will discourage sales in the US but make it easier to sell everywhere else.

Did you see one in the flesh? First impressions?
