Is there a single source ie website that lists the states that require auxiliary brakes on a toad? I have them on my trailers but they don’t run over a grand unless you replace a couple of axils. I have been towing a smart car and went to the smart car web site and most didn’t have them -that towed them 4 down. To light of a car just like you have to bungee the steering wheel on them versus free wheels on larger vehicles if you don’t they go from one side to the other and repeated I know parked at a Cracker Barrel in ms for a meal came out looked at the car got in the mh and took off on a frontage road and as soon as I hit the street and started accelerating the car started zigzagging stop and found the bungee loose.
I’m about to upgrade hopefully to a Jeep Wrangler 2dr auto transmission if I can find one for sale at a price I’m willing to part with for the condition of the vehicle. I’m gonna use the same blue ox tow bar with a new plate for the Jeep. I missed a Jeep already setup because of miss communication with the dealer I needed my mech to check it out as I’m not able to any more.

You really tested every option on the market?
FWIW I’m happy with Brake Buddy.

They do sell braking systems but you can find it here: Towing Laws | Brake Buddy®

If the toad happens to break loose, what will stop it? Also, you could be in violation of lots of laws for not having brakes on a towed vehicle weighing over 1,000 lbs.

We're pulling a '14 Explorer behind a 43' DP, and we would not be without our braking system! Besides in many states, it's the law!

Everybody likes what they have...simple. There are lots of good solutions, each with its advantages and disadvantages. Since I do not have air brakes, the field is a little more limited for me.

SMI Air Force One and Spartan Chassis
We have a Spartan chassis on our current mh and also on our previous one. We use a SMI Air Force One braking system and have been very pleased with it and how well it has functioned and how easy it is to hook-up and utilize. We are having it transfered to our new towed this week. Works well, nothing inside the car and is a dream compared to our Patriot braking system.

I have a separate brake for two reasons. 1) I want to protect me and my wife and 2) I want to protect others on the road. The third reason, the law does not override number 1&2.

It’s the law in most states. If you don’t have one and you have a wreck, your insurance may not pay.

No, I haven't.
