Towed Vehicle
Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum. i have a question. I have a 30 ft Winnebago Class c and I recently set up my Ford explorer to be towed. I finding out its too heavy to lug around, so I'm thinking about getting a Jeep Wrangler. I've looked at the Gross Vehicle weight and it seems the 4 doors Wrangler Unlimited are a little too heavy still (5400lbs). Does anyone tow a 2 door Rubicon (2010-13)? and is it easier to have a manual or auto transmission to keep in neutral?
Thank you. I haven't bought the jeep yet, just waiting to get feedback. Thank you.

We tow a 2002 Honda CR-V behind our Minnie Winnie E450). You don't even know it is back there. I would look for a used CR-V (pre 2012) to tow.

I have no idea what year or trim level Explorer you have, but I imagine it weighs somewhere around 4,500#, give or take a few hundred pounds. You won't or shouldn't be towing a vehicle at its GVW. You will be towing without passengers and with only whatever you put inside , which should be a lot less than the GVWR.

We tow a 2007 2 door jeep wrangler with all four wheels down. It has an automatic transmission. Just follow the directions in the owners manual and start pulling it.
The 2007 has a locking steering wheel so the key has to be on to unlock the steering. I put a cut off switch on to turn off the battery while towing.

Get something lighter to tow and you will enjoy the experience.

Exactly. As long as the towed vehicle weighs less than 5000 lbs or the drawbar max rating flat towing should work for a newer Wrangler. Manual or automatic transmissions are both easy tows. Xfer case in Neutral transmission in gear. GVWR is the max weight that the vehicle can safely handle, not the curb weight.

From what I saw, it looks like the 4 door Jeeps are around 4500lbs or less, that is unless I missed something. I did only look at the new ones so the old ones may weigh more
The Cherokees and some Grand Cherokees might fit the bill. Also a lot of the GM SUV's are flat towable. As with the Jeeps, pay close attention to what the Owners Manual states and what engine/transmission combo it can be done with.

Don’t look at published curb weights. Get the real weight from the door sticker (GVWR - cargo rating) of one equipped the way you would buy it and add 100 lbs for the baseplate or have the car weighed.

It's not the gross vehicle weight you need to look at. You need to be using the curb weight.

I should have added plus the weight of fuel. 1 gallon is 6.6 lb plus oil and antifreeze which is all typically less than 100 lb. If you store a lot of stuff in the toad, add that weight too.

In the USA, curb weight includes a full tank of fuel (per EPA measurement standards).
