Towing

I am towing a 1990 Nissan Sentra on the ground. It is a 4 speed manual transmission. When the ignition is off the steering wheel is locked. Should I tow with ignition off and make sure the wheels are straight ahead or leave the ingition on so the wheels will turn. Thanks

First thing would be to check the owners manual and make sure that the thing can be flat towed. If so the wheel has to be free so you can go around corners unless you intend to just go in a straight line. To have the wheel turn it has to be in the acc position. Good luck out there.

Check if that ignition locks when you turn the key off without removing the key and reinserting it. Some vehicles will not lock the wheel if you just turn the key off, but will lock if you remove the key and reinsert it.

Hi rebel510,
The ignition key receiver should have positions for:
start
on
off
lock (to remove or insert the key)
acc

If this is true for your car, turn the key to the off position. The front wheels should turn and everything should be off.

X2 on checking the owners manual. The other place to go is to either the FMCA or Good Sam vehicle towing lists for your vehicle.

Agree with above, you definitely want your front wheels free to turn, otherwise you will be wearing out your tires in a hurry.

Also be sure when wheel is unlock that there is no power to dash or you might arrive with a dead toad battery.
