Anyone out there towing 2004 xtera 4 wheels down with auto trans. They tell me I can't do it but I have a manual transfer case with neutral position so I thaught that I could. Please advise.

All I can tell you is that Remco site says the Xterra 4WD auto must be towed on a trailer. That suggests it is a full-time AWD, not a selectable neutral as you described,

I flat tow a 2013 Gen 2 Xterra 4wd which has electronic shifting - no neutral position. That said it was not easy to set up. Not sure about the early Xterra's but the Gen 2's use a CV joint at the rear diff. I had a custom adapter machined to convert to u-joint and then added a driveshaft disconnect. Had to fabricate the mount for the disconnect actuator also. Once done it's been great but it was a bit of a challenge. FYI - Xterra's are 4WD not AWD.

You may be able to but Nissan is never going to tell you it's ok. Maybe check on the Nissan forums?

Update: i did tow my 2004 xtera behind my motorhome 4 wheels down over800 miles with no problem. I requested a exploded view if myi transfer-case from nissan after inspecting the breakdown i could tell that the output bearing will get lubricated during towing by the rotation of the transfer-case output shaft and chain. Nothing else is turning. I checked the output shaft housing temp every 50 miles it hot to 130 and did nit change no matter how long i drove between checks. I towed wonderfully like it wasn't even there.
