Question Towing 2018 Colorado

Flat towing 2018 colorado. Odometer still turning with transfer case and regular transmission in neutral and key in accessory. What to do? If battery disconnected will odometer turn off? Then what about running lights on towed vehicle.

We need some more information. Is your Colorado a manual or automatic trans. If you're towing your Colorado with an automatic transmission, in neutral, and the battery connected, you're going to have all kinds of issues.

Your truck requires that the battery be disconnected and the auto trans be in Park while being towed, unless they drastically changed procedures.

Your transfer case should be in neutral and your transmission in park. I pulled the fuse on my charge line, because with the key in acc psn and battery disconnected it was still supplying power to dash.

My M&G aux brake doesn’t require any power to work, so I’ve had no issues without charge line,

It was in line, installed by the dealer near the battery in the truck.

"LDMcFalls1"....You're getting BAD info from General RV. First off, read your owner's manual under "Recreational Towing". There is a SPECIFIC procedure for towing your truck. Trust me, if you damage it, General RV is not going to reimburse you for repairs.

Here is a simplified version of the Manual's, wordy procedure, broken down and printed on how to tow your truck.

TO TOW:

1. Start engine and shift transmission to Neutral “N”

2. Shift transfer case to Neutral “N” (Hold at least 10 seconds) make sure "N" light comes on.

3. Shift transmission to Drive “D” and insure transfer case is in “Neutral”, then turn key to “ACCESSORY”.

4. Shift transmission to Park “P” and turn key to “OFF”.

5. Wait 30 seconds and restart.

6. Shift transmission to Drive “D”, turn key to “ACCESSORY”.

7. Disconnect battery.

8. Shift transmission to Park “P” (Leave key in “ACCESSORY”).

TO DRIVE:

1. Turn ignition to “OFF”.

2. Connect battery.

3. Wait 2 minutes.

4. Start engine and shift transmission to Neutral “N”, wait 30 seconds.

5. Shift transfer case to 2WD. (Usually you'll be told to roll the driver's window up and down once).

I keep the above card in my Canyon.

Here's why you DISCONNECT the battery. The Colorado and Canyon both have electric steering, that is ACTIVE, even when the ignition is off. If you tow it with the battery connected, the steering can try to correct itself while being towed. Some smarter people tried to get GM to tell them how to kill the power to the steering, without disconnecting the battery, but there has been no help in doing that.

There was a recent episode on the People's Court where a man tried to sue the tow bar installer for ruining the transmission on his Honda. His Honda was not towable four down and he trusted the tow bar installer that it was. He never read his manual. He lost and had to pay for his own trans repair.
