We flat towed our 2023 Bronco from Cali to Texas with only overnight stops. When we got to Texas, I got out and smelled burning fluid. I get into the Bronco to park it and its battery is dead.
I called AAA and had them jump the Bronco. I then tried moving it to a parking space and it was lurching and shifting very hard. The local dealer in Texas couldn’t even look at it as they had a 3 month back log for transmission issues.
We left Texas to visit relatives in Oklahoma. Once there, the local dealer said they had a 2 month back log for transmission issues. I pleaded with them to at least check the transmission fluid to see if that was the issue.
Well, after 2 days they told me that the transmission had a catastrophic failure and they weren’t sure if it would be covered under warranty.
Another 2-½ weeks go by and I was advised that it would be covered under warranty, but they were trying to place blame on my AF1 braking system causing the problem. Then they tried to say I didn’t put it in flat tow mode correctly (which was rebuked when they looked it up in the onboard computer)
I decided to get FMC involved and opened up a case with them.
Long story short, a high level technician in Detroit told me that when the Bronco battery voltage drops below a certain voltage, the flat tow feature disables and the vehicle goes from Neutral to Park.
After repair, they wanted us to rent a trailer and tow the Bronco home on that. Well that didn’t happen. I flat towed it all the way back to California making sure I started the Bronco every night.
Once I got home, I had my tech wire in a battery charge line from the Bus. We’ve taken a couple of trips since then and we haven’t had any issues.
