Towing a 1500 silverado w\UTV side by side in pu bed

We are considering buying a Can-am Maveric to haul in the back of our 2012 Silverado 1500, that we tow behind our class A motorhome. Does any one have any experience doing this. The truck tows fine now but not shure how it will tow with a UTV in the back. Thinking of loading the UTV an a Diamondback bed cover designed for UTV's.

I don't have any experience hauling a SxS on the back of a pickup, but just looking up the specs of the Maverick X3 I would think that it's way too big and heavy to haul on a 1500 series pickup. Dry weight on the base model is over 1500 pounds, and it's 11 feet long. I looked at the DiamondBack website as well and the rack that fits your truck can only accommodate a side by side up to 60" wide. I'm not sure what the rack weighs, but it's got to be 250 pounds at least. So you're looking at at least 1800 pounds carried up high. I don't think you would like how your truck would drive. I have a long bed F250 and I'm not sure I would want to carry a rig that big and heavy like that.

We hauled a RZR 800 in the bed of our Silverado 4 door. Like you, the truck towed well, but I didn't like how it handled with the RZR in the bed. I could see it not taking much to get the truck to pitch in a turn.

Here's what I did......I added air bags, not air shocks to the rear. Firestone makes a small airbag.

I added these arms to the tailgate when hauling the RZR.

Harbor Freight has a bed extender support for when you haul long lumbar, that slides into your hitch. I reworked the extender to give me some support since the RZR hung past the tailgate a little.

For me, adding the air bags was the biggest thing. Once the truck sat level when loaded. it was much more stable while towing.

Thanks we are thinking a Polaris would be a better choice, the Can-am is a bit heavy.

I tow my 4 seat 36V golf cart in the bed of my short bed Ram. The golf cart weighs around 700lbs. It does well, but I wouldn’t want to have an extra 500lbs in the bed. I do have air bags on the truck.

Thanks for the tips, those air bags sound like a great solution! I’m curious though, with the air bags, did you find you had to adjust them frequently depending on the weight of the load? Also, how did the truck handle when you were towing and hauling at the same time?

The truck rides the same empty because I only run 5psi in the bags. With the golf cart I run 40psi. It handles OK with the golf cart, you can definitely feel the weight, but it’s not unstable. When towing it, it handles the same as without the golf cart, but I do feel the weight. Again not unstable just heavy.

X2.....I only inflated the bags while hauling the RZR. The big improvement is the STABILITY as noted above. Straight line stability is not a huge issue, but turning and sweeping turns were uncomfortable without the air bags.

My 2017 40-foot diesel pusher Ventana or my 30-foot Basystar Baystar doesn't have enough capacity. My Ventana had a 5,000-pound limit on the coach even though it had the same hitch as Dutchstar with a 10,000-pound limit. My Baystar has to stay under my 26,000-pound GCWR with a 22,000 GVWR. If the numbers work for your coach, I have seen them done numerous times.
